We the Land! — Breath of the Andes Workshop
August 7–9, 2026
Smith College, Northampton, MA
Yura Sapi & Amado Espinoza bring Breath of the Andes — music as land memory and collective practice — to We the Land!, a gathering for Indigenous, Black & Brown earth stewards of color.
This one came together beautifully and we're so excited to share it. 🌿✨
Yura Sapi and Amado Espinoza have been creating new music together in English, Spanish, and Kichwa, and they brought that work to the We the Land! conference — a gathering of earth stewards of color that is truly something special.
Their workshop on music from the Andean diaspora was accepted, sharing an offering of singing, creating, and making music together with this incredible community.
Breath of the Andes: Music as Land Memory and Collective Practice
Yura Sapi & Amado Espinoza
We invite participants into the living wind-instrument traditions of the Andes, where music serves as a technology of land relationship, ceremony, and collective healing.
Through storytelling and participatory song and sound-making with Jula Julas and Sicuri flutes, participants explore Indigenous Andean approaches to breath, interdependence, and ecological connection. Participants learn melodies traditionally used in planting, harvest, communal work, and rites of passage, experiencing how interlocking rhythms encode relationships to land, seasons, and community.
No musical experience is required.
About We the Land!
We the Land! is a gathering for Indigenous, Black & Brown earth workers, land stewards, and farmers — a weekend of knowledge exchange, skill sharing, grassroots organizing, celebration, and ceremony.
Rooted in NEFOC's vision to advance land and food sovereignty in the Northeast through permanent and secure land tenure for farmers and land stewards of color, in a sacred manner that honors our ancestors' dreams — for regenerative farming, human habitat, ceremony, native species ecosystem restoration, and cultural preservation.
If you're a Black, Brown, or Indigenous earth steward of color, this convening is for you. It's magical, it's community, and it's exactly the kind of gathering the future needs.
