LiberArte Announces Spring Cycle Recipients of the Liberation Through the Arts Grant

LiberArte announces Chicava Tate of New York and Alexandra Idrobo of Cali, Colombia, as the Spring Cycle recipients of its Liberation Through the Arts Grant. The grants support artists advancing racial, social, and climate justice through creative practice.

Chicava Tate

Chicava R.L. Tate is the Creative Director of DuYe Moves, a community arts house on Governors Island offering free dance, wellness, and arts programming. Her work builds spaces for fellowship, creative expression, and healing.

The grant supports Journey of a Black Girl, an exhibition presented by Courtney Brooks Gallery celebrating the creativity, strength, and lived experiences of Black girls and women through multiple artistic mediums.

Alexandra Idrobo

Alexandra Ayala Idrobo is an interdisciplinary visual artist from Cali and Monteoscuro, Colombia. Her work across photography, video, animation, collage, and painting explores ancestral knowledge, Black identity, territory, and historical memory.

The grant supports The Golden Cacao: Memories of Repair, an investigation and creative project rooted in the history of a gold cacao-tree statuette from Monteoscuro. The work explores dispossession, cultural wealth, and the resistance of Maroon communities in Northern Cauca.

The Next Grant Cycle Is Open

The next cycle of the Liberation Through the Arts Grant is now open. Applications for Cycle 1 are due February 28, 2027, with funds distributed by June 1, 2027. The $500 unrestricted grants are open to individual artists around the world whose work advances racial, social, and climate justice. Artists who were not selected in a previous cycle are welcome to reapply.
