Frequently Asked Questions
How do you determine grant award amounts?
Grants currently average $500 per artist, set by our annual operating budget and adjusted as donations and earned revenue come in. We're aiming to fund at least two artists per cycle this year, growing that number as our funding grows.
What's the timeline for funding decisions, and what happens after I'm accepted?
Three cycles a year: Winter (apply by Jan 31, funded Apr 1), Spring (apply by Apr 30, funded Sep 1), Fall (apply by Sep 30, funded Dec 1). Not selected? Reapply next cycle — one grant per artist per calendar year. Once accepted, we ask for a photo, bio, and project description for our public announcement, a credit to LiberArte when you share the project, and a short update with documentation within nine months of receiving the grant. Beyond funding, we aim to use our platform to uplift your important work.
How should I submit work samples?
If you are able, we recommend providing a link to a PDF slide deck of your work samples. That's been the strong, consistent suggestion from our panelists. Keep it concise and clearly labeled so a reviewer can find the most relevant piece fast.
What's your AI use policy?
We do not impose a formal restriction on using AI tools to prepare your application. But panelists consistently score down applications that read as generic or clearly not written in the applicant's own voice. Use the tools you need, just make sure the final narrative sounds like you.
What social media links should I share?
Public links only — anything a reviewer can open without logging in or requesting access. Private accounts or expiring story links won't work for reviewers to view.
Is there a list of past grantees?
Yes — check the news page. Our first Liberation Through the Arts Grant cohort (Winter Cycle) went to Monica Villarreal (Milpa Móvil, Houston) and Diane Exavier (In the Mouth of the Sun, Brooklyn).
