LiberArte’s Artist-in-Residence Tambacum to Tour the U.S.

Queens, New York. August 21, 2024 – LiberArte, the Queens-based arts organization that transcends barriers through the power of creativity, will welcome its artist-in-residence Tambacum, an Afro-Colombian music group from Nuquí, Chocó, for their first U.S. Tour.

Tambacum, founded in 2020 in the bohemian neighborhood of Nuquí's Calle de la Virgen, on the Afro-Pacific coast of Colombia, will share its traditional and folkloric music with the North American audience. Tambacum's performances are a celebration of Nuquí's Afro-Colombian soul, pulsating with the rhythms of Tamborito and Cumbancha, while weaving history, tradition, and nature into a symphony of sound and spirit.

The group is led by Jhon Esteban Lasso Mena, the lead singer, composer, and dancer whose leadership has navigated Tambacum to national recognition. Tambacum won first place in 2021 at the National Festival for Traditional and Campesino Music in Cajamarca, Tolima, Colombia and has performed across Colombia, in Medellín, Bogotá and Quibdó. In June 2022, the group performed at Documenta 15 in Kassel, Germany, alongside the nonprofit organization, Más Arte Más Acción.

Tambacum was selected as LiberArte's prestigious Artist-in- Residence project for the 2023-2024 term. This honor not only recognizes their past achievements but also serves as a springboard for future endeavors, providing them with resources and support to further enrich and expand their creative vision. Yura Sapi, LiberArte’s CEO, said, “We are so proud to support Tambacum. Through our collaborative efforts, we aim to uplift Tambacum in order to realize their dreams and create meaningful connections across global communities."

LiberArte also shares Tambacum’s philosophy and aspirations. At its core, Tambacum is a beacon of hope, a symbol of resilience, and a testament to the power of community and cultural preservation. Through their music, they invite audiences to bring the Afro Colombian culture to the national center and to redefine wealth based nature’s well-being.
